Longhua hot Chamber die casting machine operation guide

2022-09-02

In die casting, there are two main processes - hot chamber and cold chamber. The technology you choose depends on your project specification and the type of results you seek to achieve. In this guide, we'll discuss the former method, including how it works, what metals are used, and what advantages it has compared to its cold chamber counterpart.

First、what is hot chamber die casting?

Die casting is a permanent die making process pioneered in the early 20th century that uses large amounts of pressure to push molten metal through the die. Due to the large amount of pressure applied, this method can produce castings with a great degree of surface detail, excellent dimensional accuracy, and extremely thin wall-sometimes as small as half a millimeter.

Industrial metal castings vary widely in size, from as small as 50 pounds or so. Parts manufactured using this process include tools, machine parts, carburetors, motors, various shells, and toys.

Second, about hot chamber die casting

In hot chamber die casting, the metal is heated in an attached die casting machine. These casting machines, also known as gooseneck machines, feature built-in furnaces that heat the metal until it reaches a molten state. This process uses a hydraulic piston to force molten metal from the furnace into the mold. This type of die casting is a relatively fast process. The hot chamber die casting process is used for high productivity applications requiring large output.

In cold chamber casting, the casting machine does not heat the metal. Instead, the molten metal must be poured into the chamber either manually using a ladle or with an automated ladle system. Once the metal is injected, a hydraulic piston forces the molten metal into the mold under high pressure.

3. Materials for hot chamber die casting.

Because hot chamber die casting has an internal melting point, manufacturers of hot chamber die casting machines recommend the use of metals with lower melting points. This is so that the metal will not dissolve or corrode the metal of the machine under heating or high pressure. For example, machine parts such as plungers are continuously submerged in molten metal. If the metal has too high a melting point, it will cause the plunger to continue to damage and lose its function. This may require expensive replacement.

Materials such as aluminum have a higher melting point. The metal has a melting point of 1,220 degrees Fahrenheit, compared with 786 degrees for materials like zinc. Therefore, aluminum is not suitable for hot chamber die casting process. The most suitable materials for hot chamber die casting are zinc and magnesium alloys, which will be discussed in more detail below.

Zinc: 1.

Zinc has special hardness and strength, which can be used in many fields and is a good substitute for pressing, machining, manufacturing and stamping components. Zinc also has excellent structural integrity and wear resistance, which makes it ideal for highly complex, multifaceted shapes in the electronics and automotive safety industries. Other advantages of zinc alloys include good electrical conductivity

, affordable raw materials, good hardness and strength great thermal conductivity, excellent stability and dimensional accuracy, great thin wall ability, able to cold form, easy connection, excellent corrosion resistance, complete recycling ability and high quality finish features.

2. Magnesium:

Magnesium is the lightest die-casting alloy but has a great strength-to-weight ratio. It also has excellent RF interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance, which is great for electrical housing and connectors. It is also used in laboratories and medical equipment to prevent interference with signals. Other advantages of magnesium include: high thermal and electrical conductivity, ability to work at high temperatures, extremely thin wall properties, high dimensional accuracy, good stability, excellent finish features, strong resistance to environmental corrosion and  complete recirculation
